Indoor Plant Light Requirement Information

Homes have a remarkably lower level of light than you would expect.  Offices tend to have more light as the work requirements entail higher levels of light for reading, writing, and other work functions.  Indoor events can have a good amount of light also, but watch for pockets of lower light.

Light Definitions

High light: light in a window. The strongest light is from the south window, next strongest is light from a west window.  Has direct light into the window with no tree or other blockage in front of the window, no heavy drapes. High light is 250 candles and up.

Medium light: light that is slightly away from a window, usually 2-6'away from a bright sunny window on the south side, has direct light into the window with no tree or other blockage in front of the window, no heavy drapes. Medium light is 100 candles - 250

Low light: from 50-100 foot candles on a light meter, artificial light source, or from 6-8 ft away from a natural light source.  Often will be on the other side of a sunny room's window or under strictly artificial light.

Photographer's Light Meter

We use a photographer's light meter to determine the light in an area.
