Living Plants Purify the Air
Researchers with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have
concluded that live plants can effectively filter contaminants from the air.
Indoor air-contaminants from sources such as furniture, drapes, insulation, and carpets can cause a number of unexplained symptoms in office workers. Live plants can eliminate many of these noxious gases, improving attendance and productivity of employees.
Not only do plants beautify the indoor environment, b ut properly designed indoor
planting can provide a way of removing certain pollutants from the air in both residential and commercial environments.
For example, did you know that one plant per 100 square
feet of floor space can inexpensively help clean the air in your home or office?
Some more sophisticated environments incorporate plant filtering systems into the
building design. Systems are built into the atrium, lobbies, and/or walkways.
Almost every tropical plant and many flowering plants are powerful air pollutant
cleaners. Below is an example of plants that in a NASA study, most effectively
removed pollutants from the air. Check to see what pollutants can be lingering in your air.
